Resumen: Wood panels played a major role as supports in European panel auntil the 17th century.
Artists like Giotto, Raphael, Dürer, Granach, Rubens, and Rembradt creared all or most of their works on wood panels. These supports may look solid to the observer, but are viewed by picture restorers as causes for concer. Many masterpieces habe been damaged irreparably or lost altogether for one or more of the following reasons (see illustrations below and on facing page).
. use of unsuitable wood by the artist or panel maker
. storage or hanging in the wrong climatic conditions
Failure to monitor climatic conditions during transport
